The Camino Francés or French Way is the most important and famous pilgrimage route among the Santiago itineraries. It is also the route with more historical tradition: it follows the ancient itinerary described in the "Codex Calixtinus" that pilgrims, in Medieval times, traveled to pay homage to the tomb of the Apostle James in Santiago de Compostela. It starts from Saint Jean Pied de Port, on the French side of the Pyrenees and crosses Navarre, La Rioja, Castilla Y León and Galicia: four splendid Spanish regions, rich in history and charm. Along the way, you see important art cities such as Pamplona, Logroño, Burgos and León, but also many nice small towns and places, rich in traditions, where pilgrims are very welcome. It is a well marked trail and does not present any particular technical difficulties, it is 780 km long and can be covered in about 30/35 days. Other popular starting points are León, located exactly in the middle of the Camino, and Sarria, just about 100 km from Santiago.
